SAP S/4 HANA is an entirely new generation of SAP Business Suite that is defined by its simplicity, massively increased efficiency, and compelling features such as planning and simulation options in many conventional transactions. A benefit for Macmahon moving to a cloud-based mining software solution meant that their businesses based across sites in Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia and South Africa could all receive real-time data.

The SAP Business Planning and Consolidation (SAP BPC) application delivers planning, budgeting, forecasting, and financial consolidation capabilities, allowing Macmahon to easily adjust plans and forecasts, speed up budget and closing cycles, and ensure compliance with financial reporting standards. SAP BPC is the core finance solution that Macmahon transitioned, starting in 2018.


Macmahon now spends 85% less time on period-end closing.

“Supported by cloud solutions from SAP, we’ve implemented several major new initiatives that have played a significant part in turning our business around tripling our revenue and almost doubling earnings before interest and taxes,” says David Van Den Berg, Chief Technical Officer, Macmahon Holdings Limited.

SAP SuccessFactors is a world-leading provider of cloud human experience management businesses are using to transform and expand HR strategies. Macmahon has used this solution to standardise their HR records, learning, onboarding, offboarding and mobilisation processes. They further chose to add Succession planning, compensation and performance and goals. “SAP Successfactors solutions are helping us create a safe and inclusive workplace that provides opportunities for all our people to develop professionally,” says David Van Den Berg.

SAP promises that moving to the S/4 HANA platform will lower inventory costs by 20%, reduce billing process times by 50% and lower your total cost of operations by 30%. Macmahon’s move to S/4 HANA achieved a $5 million reduction in working capital expenses. “We’ve made considerable savings by centralising and streamlining our processes”, says Van Den Berg. “For example, we now spend 85% less time on period-end closing”.

Macmahon was able to eliminate 25,000 paper forms by moving to a digital platform and they saved $2 million by reducing duplicate purchase orders.

Macmahon has been able to meet its goal for this project – to introduce innovative services that would differentiate it from the competition in the mining industry. The new platform has allowed Macmahon to access real-time financial visibility, see live resource capability and be able to respond to new opportunities in an agile manner. They have managed to cut down on on-premise infrastructure by 17% and reduced IT maintenance by 15%.
